Tips
There are plenty of tips and advice that can be used to combat anxiety, and we've heard a lot of them before:
Eat right, exercise, drink water, deep breathing etc. and I'm not denying that all these tips work and can really add greatness to a holistic recovery programme.
However, I have listed a couple of tips below that I have included into my own holistic and complementary recovery, and I stick to these tips on a regular basis.
So here they are, in no particular order:
Keep television very light hearted: This is a life saver for me and one which I think every anxiety sufferer should do. Even if you think that violent movies and medical drama's don't affect you, I am here to tell you that I didn't either until a single movie sparked my first anxiety attack and would become the sole reason for my developing an anxiety disorder.
Keep violence, psychological 'mind messing' drama's and medical programmes off your TV screen. Opt for comedies and light hearted movies.

Say those gratuities every day: Working in harmony with the law of attraction and manifestation has had a huge positive effect on my life, and I cannot recommend this enough.
You have to practice gratefulness every day! Say something that you are thankful for. Even if it's the simplest thing in the world. When you feeling down in the dumps and don't really feel grateful, then keep it basic and simple. Be grateful for things like warmth, shelter and food. I promise you this has changed my life! Meditation: A bit of a clique and a very common tip to alleviate anxiety but this is really an activity that has had a profound impact on my life. I honestly thought it was a load of hogwash when I first heard of it, but really my friends, this has been such a God Send to me! Start small by setting aside just 10 minutes a day for yourself. It really works wonders. |
Binaural Beats: These are some incredible little sounds that have been proven to aid in calming people down, sleeping and even studying.
Two different sounds play at two different tones into each ear and the brainwave pattern will then detect the difference between the two tones and you will hear the difference between the two tones.
Using headphones gives the best results! Please try this! I also recommend experimenting with pink, white and brown noise! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I cannot sleep with some kind of noise in the background - I also enjoy nature sounds like rain. This also may be the answer for people who suffer with tinnitus!

Accept Accept Accept: The key that I have found to getting well again is acceptance of your condition, but the thing is that most people are unable to do just that.
And who can blame them? Who wants to accept and befriend something that makes you feel so vile and awful? I completely understand, and it took me over 10 years to really understand the concept of 'accepting' and being at peace with my condition, but until you learn to accept it, you cannot start on the road to recovery. |
Nourish your inner child: Colouring in, watching a cartoon or swinging on a swing are all examples of how to nourish the inner child that resides within each and every one of us.
It can be very healing for the mental state of being to make nourishing the inner child a regular thing. Rescue remedy: I am a big fan of keeping a bottle of rescue remedy in my house and in my handbag. Whenever I feel anxious, I know I can take rescue remedy without having any nasty side effects or becoming addicted. It's also natural, and the best thing of all is that it works! I have a specific brand that I use called Natura, which unfortunately you can only get in South Africa, but there are other brands such as Bach Rescue remedy which work just as well. You can take them in tablet or drop form, and I know the Bach range sells rescue remedy in sprays and sucking sweets (known as pastilles) as well. Usually you can also take rescue remedy alongside conventional medication, however, please always clarify with a health professional. |
Mainstream media: I feel so strongly about this that I actually wrote a blog post on this which you can view here:
Anxiety and the one thing I avoid to keep me sane
Some people are shocked by the notion that I don't watch news and I don't read or buy newspapers or magazines that feature drama.

I also don't use social media nearly as often as what I used to, and I mainly use it for business now.
My life is better for it and I am not surrounding myself in negativity all the time. You may be wondering how I can abreast with happenings in the world, and trust me when I say you will find out through family, friends, work colleagues or even catching a glimpse of a headline, I mean let's be honest, you can't completely hide from it, but doing these small things has had a dramatic effect on my life, and I recommend all people, not just anxiety sufferers, but all people try to reduce mainstream media. So many people are ruled by their phones, and whip out their phone and scroll social media in any situation: whether they're in a restaurant, at work, watching TV, in traffic....it's ridiculous, and I am no exception, so challenge yourself, if you do find yourself picking up your phone with the temptation to go onto social media, stop and think, and if you must look at your phone, play a game instead of scrolling through drama and negativity! |
