Conventional
Conventional is the most common form of treatment for any ailment.
It is known as Western or Mainstream Medicine.
It is based on science, and greatly utilizes things such as Drugs, Surgery and Radiation.
Conventional Medication that is used for anxiety disorders is usually in the form of scheduled drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's), although other kinds of drugs such as tranquilizers and tricyclic Antidepressants can also be used.
As much as many of us, myself included, love more natural approaches, we have to be realistic sometimes, and understand that Mainstream medicine does have a place in this world, and without it, and all our modern healthcare technology, many people would not have access to good healthcare.
Much success has been had with conventional treatment, however, the problem is that drugs and pills are just too readily available, and when it comes to Anxiety, many people think of medication as a quick fix, simply to manage or reduce their symptoms, which yes, it does do - but it's not the only thing that needs to be done when tackling anxiety disorders - meaning that if they were to reduce these drugs or stop them, they would very likely experience bad withdrawal symptoms, often with all the anxiety coming back. However this also depends on what your cause of anxiety is and what kind of recovery plan you are choosing.
Everyone reacts differently, so while some people may need medication for only short term relief, some people need to remain on it for life. This could be the case for someone who has a chemical imbalance in their brain, and the moment they start withdrawing, they feel the effects. While this is normal when withdrawing from medication, some people actually do far worse without it, and medication helps them to cope in life.
Some people need very strong medication, along with anti psychotics (I was one of them) just after they've had a breakdown or been hospitalized. As they get stronger with the help of their chosen recovery plan, they can start withdrawing from the more heavier medication, and look at reducing the dose, but not totally withdrawing from it altogether.
Medication is a like a life raft, it helps to reduce the debilitating anxiety symptoms, giving the anxious person a bit of leeway to regain some strength so that they can start to help themselves and find a long term approach to recovery that would not involve such strong medication!

Medication saved my life - but the RIGHT medication!
For me acted like a hoist.
It lifted me up just enough so that I could get my strength back, experience life without debilitating symptoms, and clear the fuzziness in my head, so that I could start to help myself - with a holistic complementary treatment plan, and slowly start reducing the heavy dosage that I was on.

Pros of Conventional Medication:
- It usually works pretty quickly, reducing symptoms, which is the most popular reason why people take them.
Cons of Conventional Medication:
- They have to be prescribed and monitored by a doctor.
- Withdrawal can bring about some really nasty symptoms.
- Side effects, such as weight gain, are not uncommon with antidepressants.
- In some people, medication can make symptoms worse, whereas in some people, they have little to no effect.
- Dependence on medication can become a problem, especially if faced with bad withdrawal symptoms while reducing dosage - but there is a fine line between wanting and needing the medication!
- Conventional medication only masks symptoms, which is great for short term relief, but it doesn't address the actual cause of the person's Anxiety - which can be a difficult and emotional thing to tackle.
Important information regarding Conventional Medication:
- Conventional Medication for Anxiety Disorders is not to be played around with. The drugs are highly scheduled and strong, and CAN ONLY be prescribed by a doctor or psychiatrist.
- You should never stop, reduce or change your medication without your doctor's knowledge and guidance.
- Do not ever purchase un-prescribed medication online or from unknown sources.
- Taking conventional medication do not mean you are weak.
- Don't ever let anyone shame you for the fact that you take antidepressants.
