Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) can be a very irritating and embarrassing condition to the person who suffers from it. When a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviours start to become repetitive or obsessive, it is commonly considered to be OCD.

People with this condition cannot help their obsessive ways, no matter how much they try.
You will commonly find that people who have this disorder are perfectionists, and worry a lot about things in general.

What causes OCD?

Again, the exact cause cannot be pin pointed, but OCD is thought to be caused by things like Environment, Chemical imbalances and Stress or Traumatic events.
What are the symptoms of OCD?

  • Cleaning things over and over
  • Lining things up perfectly
  • Fearing germs
  • Not wanting to touch door knobs/use public bathrooms
  • Needing to do things in a repetitive manner
  • Needing to do the same thing on each side, so what is done on the left must be done on the right
  • Double or triple checking things
  • Washing hands constantly
  • Walking in a line
  • Hoarding

How to handle OCD

There are numerous ways to cope with OCD. One way that I have seen people coping with OCD is exposing themselves to the things that trigger it off. For example, you may have seen that show on TV whereby they get people who are OCD about cleaning and then someone who hasn't cleaned their homes for years.

They get them together and it is amazing how two people on opposite ends of the spectrum can help each other out. Other ways are through therapy and diversion tactics.

Getting diagnosed with OCD

OCD is pretty easy to recognize and a lot of people end up self-diagnosing themselves, however if you want a formal diagnosis, and wish to try some of the therapies available, then you must go through a reputable therapist.
