Remedies
Before I go any further, I need to clarify the following:
Okay, now that we've got that out the way, let's talk a bit about what no one wants to talk about... medication.
I have learned a lot during my years of having an anxiety disorder, some of these lessons have taken me as long to actually learn, and this is one of them:
DO NOT BE ASHAMED IF YOU TAKE CONVENTIONAL MEDICATION!!!
As someone who is not a fan of pills, and prefers everything the nice, organic and natural way, I needed to understand and realise that even conventional medication has its place in this life, and in saying that, medication saved my life!
So if you decide to opt for the conventional medication route.. don't be ashamed and more importantly don't let other people talk down on you for doing so! You do what's right for you!!!
That being said, and as mentioned at the top of this page, I am not a doctor, and therefore, everything mentioned on this page will be natural and herbal.
However, that does not mean that just because something is natural that it will work for you.
Even with herbal remedies, you still need to work with a doctor or health professional to seek out the best one for you! It is also vital to understand, especially, if you are already on medication, that not all herbal remedies and conventional medicine work well together!
Therefore, it is imperative that you speak to a professional before taking any kind of herbal remedy!
Now, let's move on to some alternative and natural favourites of mine which are fine for me to use in conjunction with my conventional medication. This does not mean it will be fine with your specific medicine though - so again, please always check beforehand!
- I am not a medical doctor or nurse
- I am not a pharmacist
- Do not take unprescribed medication without a doctor's supervision
- Do not reduce or alter any medication without a doctor's knowledge
- Even when using a herbal remedy, you need a professionals advice first!

Rescue Remedy: Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am a big fan of rescue remedy and this is because it honestly works! I have experimented with different kinds, this being different brands and the drops and tablets, and my absolute favourite has got to be the Natura brand in a tablet form.
However, unfortunately, Natura is only available in South Africa (my home country) but what I can recommend is Dr Bach Rescue Remedy, which is available both in the UK and USA. Natura can be found at any Dischem store) Rescue Remedy can be found at any health shop or pharmacy such as Boots, Superdrug and Holland And Barrett) Bach Flower Remedies: Amazing little essences these are, and rescue remedy is also found in the Bach brand. Developed by Dr Edward Bach who believed that the dew on flowers held healing properties. He developed 38 remedies in total, of which are all divided into 7 sub categories of which one category is dedicated to anxiety (fear). For more information on flower remedies, check out www.healingherbs.co.uk and www.bachcentre.com St John's Wort: St John's Wort is a herbal remedy that is sometimes sold as 'Hypericum'. It is known for its healing properties especially for anxiety and depression. I wish to stress again that it is very important to consult with a doctor before taking St John's Wort alongside conventional medication! As far as we are aware, St John's Wort can only be used on its own! Herbal Tea: Hands up! Anyone else who is completely taken in by tea and all of their glorious scents and healing abilities? Me too! I love it, and I wouldn't say that I'm an avid tea drinker, but there is something about drinking a cup of tea that you know has all the properties to just make you feel amazing inside! Camomile tea and Valerian tea are my favourites to drink for anxious moments, and both have a natural sedative like effect, so this makes them great teas to drink before bedtime. They contain no caffeine or tannins. I have also come to love the ready made teas that are infused with a variety of different herbs especially for sleep and for relaxation. Kalms: This is a natural sleeping aid that contains Valerian Root, and will help you to induce sleep. You can take the tablet about an hour before bed. Again, please check with doctor first before taking any herbal medicine |
